The former Vice President and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) flagbearer for the 2024 election, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, today submitted his nomination form at the party’s headquarters in Accra to contest for the party’s flagbearer for the 2028 presidential election.
Speaking to a large group of party members and sympathisers after submitting his form, Dr Bawumia stated clearly why he was the best to lead the NPP in the 2028 election considering his vast experience as a former Vice President whose ideas and initiatives continue to benefit many Ghanaians and the country as whole.
He said he was not embarking on this journey for his self, but for “our nation and our party”, adding that the NPP and Ghana need a leader who symbolises deep intellect, humility, respect for all persons, unity, courage, foresight, and resilience, the characteristics which define his personality.
“I have the integrity, competence, compassion, humility and the values not only required to lead this party but to lead this country”, Dr Bawumia emphasised.
The former Vice President who traced the authentic leadership traits and characteristics of the NPP right from the days of Danquah, Dombo, Busia, Paa Willie, Edward Akufo-Addo and Baffuor Akoto, to the recent times of Victor Owusu, Adu Boahene, John Agyekum Kufour and Nana Akufo-Addo, said the party and Ghana needs a leader who embodies those sterling leadership qualities which can be found in him.
He appealed to delegates for the January 31 election of the party’s flagbearer to bear in mind that the election is not only for a party flagbearer, but an election for the soul of the party.
The election, he said, will determine whether or not the NPP will hold on to its values that make it a great party focused on bridging the gap between the rich and the poor instead of widening it.
Dr Bawumia told the crowd that he was the most tested and most prepared among all the candidates vying for the party’s flagbearer position and President of Ghana in 2029 because in the last 16 years he had joined every constituency at least 5 times to work with the grassroots and campaigned for the NPP.
He listed some of the innovative ideas he brought into government and some of the projects he championed as Vice President which Ghanaians are currently benefiting from.
Among the projects were the Bank of Ghana’s Gold Purchase Programme, Gold for Oil, accelerated issuance of the Ghanacard, Mobile Money Interoperability and the Ghana Post Digital Property Address System, all these initiatives being first in the whole of Africa.
Other programmes he initiated or championed included Agenda 111, One Constituency One Ambulance, the Zipline Medical Drone Delivery, which is the largest in the world, the Universal QR Code Payment System, No Guarantor Student Loans, E-Gates at the Kotoka International Airport, the digitization of medical records at all district, regional, and teaching hospitals, and the Ghana Government Citizens App.
He said the success of his initiatives and programmes he championed as Vice President have been acknowledged by the Bank of Ghana, the IMF, and even some within the NDC leadership.
The former Vice President reminded members, especially delegates to the January 31 election that like thousands of them who may not have more money to give to the party, he has over the years dedicated all his sweat, reputation, knowledge and his person to working with grassroot members for the success of this party.
“I demonstrate my strength by getting results, not by making noise or by insults or bragging about money”, he noted.
Dr Bawumia was accompanied to the party headquarters by his wife, former Second Lady Hajia Samira Bawumia, party regional chairmen, former ministers, and key members of his campaign team.
The NPP is scheduled to hold the election of its flagbearer for the 2028 election on January 31, 2026, with Dr Bawumia projected by many political watchers as being the frontliner.
