Minority Leader in Parliament, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, has accused Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie of being part of what he describes as a “grand conspiracy” that led to the removal of former Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo.

According to Afenyo-Markin, the circumstances surrounding Justice Torkornoo’s removal were unjust and involved individuals within the Judiciary.
Speaking on Accra-based Atinka TV, the Minority Leader specifically named the current Chief Justice, alleging that he had a role in the events that culminated in Justice Torkornoo’s removal.
“My Lord Paul Baffoe-Bonnie was part of the grand conspiracy against his predecessor Gertrude Torkornoo. Her removal was a grand conspiracy and he knows it and we know it but one day one day, the true story will be told,” Afenyo-Markin said.
He further described the removal of Justice Torkornoo as an “act of injustice” and indicated that the NPP would seek to reverse the decision if it wins the next general election.
“I don’t see why that woman will not be reinstated when the NPP wins power. Her removal is an act of injustice,” he stated.
Justice Gertrude Torkornoo was appointed Chief Justice in June 2023. Her removal subsequently became a major subject of political and legal debate, with the NPP strongly questioning the process and justification for the termination of her tenure.
Justice Torkornoo became the first Chief Justice of Ghana under the Fourth Republic to be removed from office.
Afenyo-Markin’s latest comments are likely to reignite debate over the circumstances surrounding her removal and place renewed political scrutiny on Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie and other actors within the Judiciary.
The Minority Leader maintained that should the NPP return to power, it would consider reinstating Justice Torkornoo, signalling that the controversy surrounding her removal is likely to remain a significant political issue.
