The Ghana Bloggers Association (GBA) has called for due process, transparency, and the protection of constitutional rights following the recent arrests of several bloggers, digital content creators, and social media personalities that have sparked widespread public debate.

In a press statement issued by the Association, the GBA acknowledged the responsibility of law enforcement agencies to investigate allegations of criminal conduct but emphasized that all individuals are entitled to fair treatment under the law.

“The Ghana Bloggers Association recognizes the important role of law enforcement in investigating allegations of criminal conduct. At the same time, we believe that every individual is entitled to the protection of the law, including the right to due process, fair treatment, access to legal representation, and the presumption of innocence until proven otherwise,” the statement said.

The Association noted that the recent developments have generated concern within Ghana’s digital content creation community over the need to strike a balance between enforcing the law and safeguarding the constitutional right to freedom of expression.

While reaffirming that freedom of expression remains a cornerstone of Ghana’s democracy, the GBA stressed that the right comes with corresponding responsibilities. It urged bloggers, vloggers, TikTok creators, influencers, and other digital communicators to produce content that is factual, respectful, and compliant with the laws of Ghana.

The Association further advocated stronger collaboration between state institutions, law enforcement agencies, media organizations, digital creators, and civil society to promote a safe and responsible digital environment.

According to the statement, education and continuous dialogue remain essential tools for addressing misinformation, harmful online content, and disputes arising from digital publications rather than relying solely on punitive measures.

The GBA also called on relevant institutions to ensure that all investigations and legal proceedings are conducted transparently, professionally, and in strict adherence to the Constitution and the laws of Ghana.

Reaffirming its commitment to ethical digital journalism and responsible online communication, the Association pledged to continue promoting media literacy and educating content creators on their legal rights and responsibilities.

“The Ghana Bloggers Association remains committed to supporting ethical digital journalism, promoting media literacy, and equipping content creators with knowledge of their legal rights and responsibilities. We stand ready to collaborate with all stakeholders to strengthen Ghana’s digital ecosystem while safeguarding democratic freedoms,” the statement concluded.

GHANA BLOGGERS ASSOCIATION

PRESS STATEMENT

On the Recent Arrests of Bloggers and Digital Content Creators

The Ghana Bloggers Association has taken note of the recent arrests of several digital content creators and social media personalities that have generated widespread public discussion.

As an organization committed to promoting responsible digital journalism, blogging, and online content creation, we recognize the important role of law enforcement in investigating allegations of criminal conduct. At the same time, we believe that every individual is entitled to the protection of the law, including the right to due process, fair treatment, access to legal representation, and the presumption of innocence until proven otherwise.

The recent developments have raised concerns within the digital content creation community regarding the balance between enforcing the law and protecting the constitutional right to freedom of expression. While freedom of expression is a cornerstone of Ghana’s democracy, it also carries corresponding responsibilities. We therefore urge bloggers, vloggers, TikTok creators, influencers, and all digital communicators to ensure that their content is factual, respectful, and compliant with the laws of Ghana.

The Association believes that sustained engagement between state institutions, law enforcement agencies, digital creators, media organizations, and civil society is essential to fostering a safe, responsible, and vibrant online environment. Education and dialogue should remain key tools in addressing misinformation, harmful content, and disputes arising from online publications.

We further encourage all relevant institutions to ensure that investigations and legal proceedings are conducted transparently, professionally, and in full accordance with the Constitution and the laws of Ghana.

The Ghana Bloggers Association remains committed to supporting ethical digital journalism, promoting media literacy, and equipping content creators with knowledge of their legal rights and responsibilities. We stand ready to collaborate with all stakeholders to strengthen Ghana’s digital ecosystem while safeguarding democratic freedoms.
