The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed strong disappointment in recent remarks made by former Assin Central Member of Parliament and former flagbearer aspirant, Kennedy Ohene Agyapong, describing his public criticism of the party as “unfortunate.”
Mr. Agyapong came under scrutiny following a television appearance on Thursday, June 18, during which he criticised the NPP and cautioned that he could reveal sensitive information about the party if provoked. His comments have since sparked concern within party ranks and among supporters.
The controversy also follows earlier remarks by Mr. Agyapong accusing the NPP of failing to complete and operationalise the Afari Military Hospital during its eight years in government.
Reacting to the development in an interview with Citi News, the NPP’s Deputy General Secretary, Haruna Mohammed, urged party members to exercise restraint in their public commentary, stressing the need to protect the image and unity of the party.
“We are very much disappointed in this particular commentary,” he stated. “As senior members of the party, not only him, people should be guided and mindful of the public commentary that we make about the party and also about successive governments under the NPP.”
Mr. Mohammed emphasised that the party’s electoral success is closely tied to the achievements of its past administrations, particularly under former Presidents John Agyekum Kufuor and Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo. He noted that their contributions to national development remain key pillars upon which the NPP must build its future political fortunes.
“We cannot win political power without standing on the strength of President Kufuor’s performance and also on the strength of President Akufo-Addo’s performance,” he said. “They have made significant gains, and these gains cannot be overlooked.”
Describing Mr. Agyapong’s comments as regrettable, Mr. Mohammed reiterated the importance of discipline and unity within the party, especially among senior figures.
Meanwhile, calls have emerged from some party supporters and members for disciplinary action against Mr. Agyapong. However, Mr. Mohammed indicated that the party would follow due process in addressing the issue.
“When you check the party’s constitution, we have the grievances procedure,” he explained. “I believe that people are making calls and some are submitting petitions regarding these commentaries. Due process must always be used in all instances.”
The incident has highlighted growing internal tensions within the NPP, as the party navigates post-government reflections and prepares for future political contests.
