The Majority Caucus in Parliament has dismissed claims that its members were allocated special travel privileges, including two slots each, to attend the ongoing 2026 FIFA World Cup, describing the allegations as misleading and capable of creating unnecessary tension in the House.
The controversy emerged following accusations from the Minority side of Parliament, which alleged that Members of Parliament on the Majority side were each given two travel slots for the global football tournament, while their respective constituencies were allocated three slots.
The Minority further suggested that this arrangement created an uneven and preferential distribution of opportunities linked to the World Cup attendance.
However, the Majority Caucus strongly refuted these claims, insisting that no such allocation was made to MPs or their constituencies.
Addressing the matter on the floor of Parliament on Wednesday, June 17, the Majority Chief Whip, Rockson-Nelson Dafeamekpor, denied the allegations and emphasised that the government is not financing or allocating travel slots to individual Members of Parliament.
“Nobody was given two slots. The government announced that they were not sponsoring anybody apart from the established national supporters’ union to the World Cup.
“MPs have not been given slots and so when you sit here and say those things, you are aggravating disorder in the House. How do you stand on the Floor of Parliament and be insinuating that slots were given but we kept them for ourselves?”
