The Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has disclosed that steps are underway to appoint a replacement to the Council of State following the resignation of former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo.

According to Kwakye Ofosu, the resignation process has been concluded after President John Dramani Mahama formally accepted Justice Akuffo’s decision to step down from the advisory body.
Speaking during the Government Accountability Series on Monday, June 15, 2026, he said the appointment of a new member would be done in accordance with constitutional provisions.
Kwakye Ofosu revealed that Justice Akuffo submitted a resignation letter to the President in September 2025, indicating her intention to leave the Council of State, but did not state the reasons for her decision.
“I can confirm that indeed, Justice Sophia Akuffo has resigned from her position as a member of the Council of State. She submitted a letter in September 2025 to the President indicating her desire to resign. She did not disclose the reason for wanting to resign,” he stated.
Former CJ Sophia Akuffo resigns from Council of State – Report
He explained that although the President was required to accept the resignation, the process was delayed after members of the Council of State requested time to engage the former Chief Justice to determine whether any concerns or grievances could be resolved and convince her to remain.
According to him, months of consultations were held, but Justice Akuffo maintained her decision to resign.
“With all those efforts exhausted, the President has accepted the resignation, and the process to appoint a replacement is underway in accordance with the Constitution,” Kwakye Ofosu said.
Justice Akuffo’s departure officially ends her tenure on the Council of State, creating a vacancy that the government says will soon be filled through the constitutional process.
