Youth activist and political analyst Ivan Kyei has criticised the public approach adopted by lawyer Andy Appiah-Kubi following his decision to withdraw from representing Bernard Antwi-Boasiako, popularly known as Chairman Wontumi, in the Samreboi case.

Speaking on Joy Prime, Kyei said he understood Appiah-Kubi’s frustrations but questioned the number of media appearances he has granted since announcing his intention to leave the case.
“Andy Appiah-Kubi is one of the most experienced senior lawyers in this country and he’s admired by many. I have listened to him for quite some time now and I can understand his frustration relating to the ongoing case,” he said.
However, Kyei argued that the lawyer’s conduct since filing his notice to withdraw has created the impression of a public relations campaign.
“I think it is quite unfortunate he has started a certain PR campaign in the media.”
According to him, Appiah-Kubi has spent considerable time discussing the matter publicly while the case remains before the court.
“Ever since he filed this notice, he has conducted more radio and TV interviews than the number of times he has represented Wontumi in court.”
The comments come after Appiah-Kubi disclosed on Asempa FM that he had filed a motion seeking the court’s permission to withdraw his legal services in the case.
The lawyer said he had provided reasons for his decision in an affidavit filed before the court.
Kyei maintained that lawyers handling active cases should exercise caution when discussing proceedings publicly.
“At his level, I don’t expect that from him because this is a case that is still ongoing and pending before a court of competent jurisdiction.”
