Ghanaian business magnate Ibrahim Mahama has extended a major lifeline to Emmanuel Asamoah, a Ghanaian who recently survived a xenophobic attack in South Africa, by donating GH¢200,000 to support his reintegration and economic recovery in Ghana.

Asamoah came into the public spotlight after a disturbing viral video captured him being assaulted during a wave of xenophobic incidents in South Africa. His situation drew national concern, prompting intervention from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which facilitated his safe return home.
Following his repatriation, conversations around how best to support his recovery and help him rebuild his livelihood gained momentum. In a statement released on Tuesday, May 12, Rafik Mahama confirmed that Ibrahim Mahama had stepped in with both financial assistance and long-term business support.
According to the statement, the GH¢200,000 donation is intended to give Asamoah a one-month period of rest to reconnect with his family before relocating to Accra to begin a new chapter. Beyond the cash support, Mahama has committed to establishing a cement distribution and hardware business for him.
Asamoah, who previously worked in nails and hairdressing while in South Africa, has expressed interest in transitioning into the hardware sector—a move expected to provide more stable and scalable income.
The gesture also carried a broader message. Ibrahim Mahama used the opportunity to call on Ghanaians living abroad, particularly those facing hardship or discrimination, to consider returning home. He encouraged them to take advantage of local business opportunities and skills development initiatives as part of rebuilding their lives.
Asamoah is expected to relocate to Accra in the coming weeks to begin preparations for his new business under the guidance of the Mahama-led support initiative.
This development comes at a time of renewed concern over xenophobic violence in parts of South Africa, which has affected several African migrants in recent weeks and reignited conversations about safety, migration, and reintegration across the continent.
