The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) has arrested Maxwell Kofi Jumah, the former Managing Director of GIHOC Distilleries Company Limited, as part of an ongoing investigation into alleged financial misconduct and breaches of public financial management procedures.
Jumah was reportedly picked up on Tuesday, April 28, 2026, and is currently in EOCO custody assisting with investigations. His arrest follows earlier enforcement actions linked to the same probe, including a search of his residence in Atonsu, Kumasi, on April 14, during which officials are said to have presented authorisation documents before conducting the operation. Items reportedly seized during the search include laptops, personal documents, and property keys.
The Ashanti Regional Communications Director of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Paul Yandoh, confirmed both the arrest and the earlier search. He has, however, raised concerns about the procedure used during the April 14 operation, suggesting it may not have followed due process. EOCO has not publicly responded to these claims.
This is not the first time Jumah has been linked to an investigation involving GIHOC Distilleries. In June 2025, National Security operatives arrested him at his Kumasi residence following a complaint filed by the state-owned company. That earlier case led to the recovery of three vehicles reported missing by GIHOC, according to the Criminal Investigations Department (CID). He was later granted bail.
The current EOCO investigation is reported to focus on alleged breaches that occurred during his tenure as Managing Director. These include the suspected acquisition of a Genesis G90 luxury vehicle at a significantly reduced value, the alleged unauthorised retention of company vehicles, and the reported sale of GIHOC-owned properties in Tema, valued at over $700,000. Investigators are also examining claims relating to inflated staffing records at the company during his leadership.
No formal charges have been filed at this stage, and EOCO has not issued an official statement detailing the basis of the arrest.
Maxwell Kofi Jumah previously served as Managing Director of GIHOC Distilleries, a state-owned enterprise, under the New Patriotic Party administration. He also represented the Asokwa constituency as a Member of Parliament.
Investigations remain ongoing, with authorities expected to provide further updates as the case develops.
