African Ambassadors to be briefed as Ghana pushes for action on xenophobia in South Africa, following diplomatic engagement between Ghana and South African authorities over a viral video that has raised concerns about the safety of foreign nationals.

Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, disclosed that he has held direct talks with his South African counterpart, Ronald Lamola, regarding the disturbing footage which appears to show a confrontation involving a Ghanaian resident.
According to Mr Ablakwa, the South African government has responded with urgency, expressing concern over the incident and committing to a full-scale investigation. He added that authorities in South Africa are taking steps to engage the diplomatic community, including a planned briefing for African ambassadors to address the matter.
The Minister noted that Ghana is also working closely with its diplomatic mission in South Africa to coordinate a response and monitor developments on the ground.
He further confirmed that the Ghanaian captured in the viral video has been identified and is receiving consular assistance. “Our colleagues have located the main victim and are offering the necessary support. He is doing very well,” he said.
Mr Ablakwa reassured the public that no Ghanaian lives have been lost in connection with the incident, urging calm as investigations proceed.
He reiterated Ghana’s commitment to protecting its citizens both at home and abroad, stressing that the government remains firm in safeguarding their welfare.
The Foreign Affairs Minister also called for unity and restraint, cautioning against any actions that could undermine relations among African countries as efforts continue to address the situation diplomatically.
