The Minority Caucus in Parliament says it is shifting its full attention to holding the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) to account, following the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) successful presidential primaries and the selection of Dr Mahamudu Bawumia as flagbearer.
In a statement released on January 31, 2026, the caucus noted that the completion of the internal party process has cleared the way for a renewed focus on parliamentary scrutiny and broader public engagement.
According to the caucus, its priority is now to rigorously assess the performance of the current administration and demand accountability on issues affecting the country.
The statement pointed to several areas of concern, including the management of Ghana’s gold resources, public finances, transportation infrastructure, and the ongoing challenge of illegal mining.
The caucus raised alarm over what it described as a troubling decline in the nation’s gold reserves, alleging that questionable deals and irregular transactions have contributed to significant losses. It further claimed that fraudulent gold trading arrangements involving state bodies, such as the Minerals Commission and the Bank of Ghana, have cost the country substantial sums.
On transportation, the Minority criticised what it sees as poor oversight and ineffective management, arguing that the state of public transport has worsened and placed an increasing burden on commuters.
The caucus also took aim at the government’s handling of illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey, saying efforts to curb the practice have fallen short. It warned that continued illegal mining is contaminating water sources and causing extensive damage to farmlands.
Employment was another key issue highlighted in the statement. The Minority accused the government of failing to provide sustainable job opportunities for young people, linking the situation to growing economic hardship and social challenges.
Despite its criticism of the current administration, the Minority Caucus struck an optimistic note about its own party’s prospects. It said the NPP is emerging from the primaries more cohesive and focused, positioning itself as a credible alternative ahead of the 2028 general elections.
The caucus concluded by assuring Ghanaians that the NPP is reorganised and ready to offer what it described as responsible leadership, economic recovery, and inclusive growth for the country.
