Minister of State in Charge of Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, has dismissed allegations that President John Dramani Mahama plans to seek an unconstitutional third term in office, calling the claims “baseless and imaginary.”
His response follows assertions by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) that President Mahama may be secretly considering an extension beyond Ghana’s two-term presidential limit.
The NPP pointed to remarks by some NDC supporters on social media who have expressed admiration for the President and urged him to continue beyond two terms.
But speaking on Channel One TV’s Face to Face on Tuesday, December 9, Mr. Kwakye Ofosu stressed that President Mahama has never entertained such an idea.
“The NPP have whipped themselves into a needless frenzy,” he said. “President Mahama has stated emphatically that he will respect the Ghanaian Constitution. He is a consummate democrat, so there is no third term anywhere for him or any other person as far as the Constitution is concerned.”
He emphasised that the views of individual supporters do not represent the President’s intentions.
“Anyone can say what they want. The fact that some people have gone on Facebook to say he should go for a third term doesn’t mean that will happen. The man himself has said he’s not interested,” Mr. Kwakye Ofosu clarified.
He urged the opposition to stop what he described as needless political speculation.
“So NPP should stop wasting their time and everybody’s time, and purporting to be angry.
It’s an absurd fantasy they’re getting themselves into. The President has not expressed any intent. Any talk about it is a complete waste of everybody’s time,” he added.
The government maintains that President Mahama is fully committed to constitutional order and remains focused on governance rather than manufactured controversy.
