Minister for Education, Haruna Iddrisu, has cautioned parents and students against treating schools as fashion or beauty platforms, emphasizing that educational institutions are meant to shape discipline and character, not showcase personal style.
Speaking at the 75th Anniversary celebration of Mawuli School, the Minister directed the Ghana Education Service (GES) and heads of second-cycle institutions to take full control of student behaviour on their campuses.
“There is an ongoing debate on social media about haircuts and the size and length of hair in secondary schools. We will not tolerate it today, and we won’t tolerate it tomorrow, as long as we are molding character. If we give in to hair today, tomorrow it will be shoes, and the next day it will be the way they dress.”
He cautioned parents against expecting schools to accommodate fashion-forward appearances, saying: “Anybody who thinks their child will walk into an institution of learning as if attending a beauty contest should rethink. The school environment is not designed for that purpose and will not tolerate it,” he warned.
Empowering Educators, Protecting Students
Minister Iddrisu called on headmasters and the GES to take full control of student behavior on campuses, reinforcing the importance of discipline in shaping responsible citizens. However, he also stressed the need for fairness and professionalism in enforcing school rules.
“We will not tolerate indiscipline in our schools, including cases where teachers abuse learners. Any teacher found taking advantage of a student will face strict sanctions,” he warned.
