President John Dramani Mahama has urged world leaders and development partners to go beyond rhetoric and take bold, transformative steps to advance women’s empowerment and gender equality.
Speaking at the Global Leaders’ Meeting on Women in Beijing on Monday, October 13, President Mahama said it was time for governments to translate their commitments into tangible actions that improve the lives of women and girls, particularly in Africa.
“The African woman is particularly vulnerable, and I wish to use this platform to call on my colleague African leaders to focus on the welfare and empowerment of our women,” he stated.
The President stressed that gender equality was not only a matter of justice but also a driver of sustainable development. “When women succeed, families thrive, communities become stronger, and nations progress,” he added.
Drawing from Ghana’s experience, President Mahama noted that investing in women yields measurable gains in productivity, innovation, and social cohesion.
“As we look to Beijing, I call on all governments and partners to move beyond platitudes and commit towards transformative action,” he said, emphasising that the anniversary should mark a turning point in global efforts toward equality.
He concluded by urging collective action to make the next decade “one of bold progress and shared prosperity for women and girls worldwide.”
