In a move that has sparked widespread criticism, the Minority in Parliament once again turned their backs on democratic process by staging a dramatic walkout during the swearing-in of Ablekuma North MP-elect, Ewurabena Aubynn, on Tuesday, July 22, 2025.

TV3’s Chris Yalley, who was in Parliament, reported that the Minority Chief Whip Annoh-Dompreh wanted to make a preliminary comment prior to the swearing in, but he was not allowed.

The Speaker said he can only make a statement after she has been sworn in. Annoh-Dompreh then said, If that’s the case, they cannot take part

Ewurabena Aubynn was declared the winner by officials of the Electoral Commission at the Greater Accra Regional office on July 11.

She secured a total of 34 090 votes compared with that of her closest contender, Nana Akua Afriyie of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

The declaration was made after a rerun of the election in 19 polling stations where over 6,000 eligible voters were expected to cast their votes.

Turnout was however, low.

The rerun became necessary following disagreement between the NDC and the New Patriotic Party (NPP) over discrepancies in results from some 37 polling stations.

After prolonged discussions, the Electoral Commission to rerun the election at 19 out of the 37 polling stations. The NPP protested the decision and proceeded to apply to the High Court for an Injunction.

The injunction was dismissed, paving way for the conduct of the election. Despite sporadic incidents of violence, the election was largely peaceful.

At the end of exercise, Ewurabena Aubyn of the NDC was declared the winner over her NPP counterpart, Nana Akua Afriyie.

Chaotic scenes

Earlier in the day, former MP for Awutu Senya East Constituency, Hawa Koomson was beaten up by some unknown thugs who forcefully invaded the Odorkor Methodist 1 polling station during voting at the Ablekuma North constituency.

Some unknown thugs pulled up in a pick-up vehicle at the polling station and forcefully entered the premises of the polling station which was then being protected by police officers.

TV3’s Stanley Nii Blewu who was present at the scene reported that the former lawmaker was kicked in the groin and fell to the ground. After which, the thugs continued to kick her on the ground until the police officers quickly intervened and whisked her away.

Also, the Deputy National Organiser of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Chris Lloyd Nii Kwei Asamoah was beaten by a group of unidentified thugs at the Odorkor Methodist 1 Polling Station during the ongoing parliamentary election rerun in the Ablekuma North constituency.
