The President of Ghana, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, has held a series of high-level meetings in Brussels aimed at advancing Ghana’s healthcare agenda and strengthening international partnerships in the health sector.
Ahead of the Gavi Vaccine Alliance pledging session, President Mahama met with renowned philanthropist and co-chair of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Mr. Bill Gates. Their discussions centered on Ghana’s major health interventions, including the country’s progress on the Free Primary Healthcare programme and the work of the National Vaccine Institute.
President Mahama also highlighted the government’s decision to uncap the National Health Insurance Fund (NHIS), a bold move aimed at expanding healthcare access and ensuring sustainable health financing for millions of Ghanaians.
“I had productive discussions with Mr. Bill Gates this afternoon in Brussels, ahead of the Gavi Vaccine Alliance pledging session,” President Mahama shared. “We covered key topics, including the significant progress on the Free Primary Healthcare programme, the ongoing work of the National Vaccine Institute, and the impact of uncapping the NHIS to improve healthcare access and financing.”
He also expressed appreciation to Mr. Gates and the Gates Foundation for their continued support of Ghana’s health initiatives and their vital contributions to the Gavi Vaccine Alliance.
In a separate meeting, President Mahama engaged with José Manuel Barroso, Chair of the Gavi Board and former President of the European Commission. Mr. Barroso commended President Mahama for his steadfast support for Gavi’s vaccine replenishment efforts, which have played a critical role in saving lives across the developing world.
“Supporting an organisation that is doing such crucial work for global health is always a pleasure,” President Mahama remarked, reiterating his commitment to global health equity.
The meetings reaffirm Ghana’s commitment to international cooperation in strengthening health systems and building a healthier, more resilient future for all.
President Mahama is expected to play a key role at the Gavi pledging session, where world leaders and stakeholders will commit to funding vaccine programs that protect millions of children and vulnerable populations worldwide.
