Gabby Asare Otchere-Darko, Chairman of Asaase Broadcasting Company Ltd., has said that the National Democratic Congress’s (NDC) victory in the 2024 presidential election came as no surprise to him, citing historical patterns and prevailing national challenges as key reasons.
Speaking on the Asaase Breakfast Show on Monday, June 16, Otchere-Darko reflected on the outcome of the election, which saw former President John Dramani Mahama defeat Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP).
“First of all, NDC winning was not a surprise. Because historically, after a while, the country moves on and that sort of thing.
“And then, of course, there were a lot of challenges,” he stated.
While acknowledging Mahama’s comeback was expected, he admitted that the NPP’s performance—particularly under Bawumia’s candidacy—caught him off guard.
“I wasn’t surprised by the results John Mahama got. But I was surprised by the results the NPP got. And I think I’m not alone. It was a difficult election,” he added.
Otchere-Darko’s comments come in the aftermath of the 2024 general elections, in which Bawumia, despite mounting an extensive campaign as the first Muslim flagbearer of the NPP, was unable to secure a win.
The NDC’s victory marked Mahama’s return to power, underscoring a shift in voter sentiment after years of economic hardship and political dissatisfaction.
