Veteran Ghanaian highlife musician, Agya Koo Nimo, has expressed a heartfelt desire to meet President John Dramani Mahama following a recent public acknowledgment of his contributions to Ghana’s music and cultural heritage.
Speaking in an interview with broadcaster Kafui Dey, the legendary musician said he was deeply touched when President Mahama recognized him during the launch of the Black Star Experience on May 1, 2025. At the event, Mahama directed the Minister of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, to organise a special ceremony in honour of Agya Koo Nimo.
Reacting to the gesture, the highlife icon said he felt honoured that the President had mentioned him by name and acknowledged his decades-long impact on Ghanaian music.
“Let the President know that we are very appreciative of what he said, especially mentioning Koo Nimo,” he said.
The 88-year-old music legend noted that he has never had the opportunity to meet President Mahama in person and hopes to do so soon.
“I haven’t met him before. It’s not easy to meet great people,” he remarked. “But if one day he passes by my side, the whole world would shake. I would love to speak with him and shake his hand.”
He revealed that while he has previously met Vice President Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang — who once invited him to perform in Cape Coast — he still looks forward to meeting the President personally.
“I want to thank him face-to-face for the respect and honour he showed me,” Agya Koo Nimo added. “We are proud of him.”
Agya Koo Nimo, known for his rich blend of traditional rhythms and storytelling, remains a revered figure in Ghana’s cultural landscape. His comments have resonated with many who see the recognition as long overdue.
