Popular Ghanaian actor Van Vicker, has called on Ghanaians to put aside political biases and acknowledge President John Dramani Mahama for the recent appreciation of the Ghanaian cedi.
In a Facebook post sighted by Graphic Showbiz, the celebrated actor praised the Mahama-led administration for its role in stabilising the local currency, which has recently gained strength against the US dollar.
“Mr. President, I must congratulate you on the strengthening of the Ghana cedis on the world market. Ayekoo,” Van Vicker wrote, adding that while there may be various explanations for the development, the result deserves commendation.
He noted that some theories being floated to explain the cedi’s recovery include US trade wars, reduced government spending, a lawsuit against the Governor of the Bank of Ghana, increased dollar circulation, and even sheer luck. However, he insisted that no matter the cause, the positive outcome should be recognised
The Ghana cedi is approximately GHC11 to $1 today. It was around GHC17 to $1 just a few months ago,” he pointed out, describing the improvement as “remarkable for Ghana as a country.”
Van Vicker expressed concern that some Ghanaians, particularly those abroad, are unhappy with the cedi’s appreciation due to political interests.
He described such attitudes as “narcissistic” and urged people to be objective in assessing the nation’s progress. “Regrettably some Ghanaians living abroad are not enthused because the dollar has dropped against the cedis. How narcissistic can one be? This is not a political statement. It is an acknowledgement of a good job done so far. Call a spade a spade. Give credit to whom credit is due,” he emphasised.
The actor concluded with a light-hearted remark, expressing hope that if the progress continues, Ghana’s currency could return to the strength it had in 2007 saying “I think the current cedis orbit is remarkable for Ghana as a country and I am optimistic it’s sustainable. Your Excellency JM, if you can take us back to 2007, heerrrh like e go be ‘kerker’.”
