The High Court in Accra has acquitted and discharged James Gyakye Quayson, the Member of Parliament for Assin North, of all five criminal charges brought against him.
The ruling, delivered by Justice Mary Ekue Yanzuh, concludes a three-year legal battle that has gripped the nation.
Quayson had been facing charges of deceit of public officer, forgery of passport or travel certificates, knowingly making a false statutory declaration, perjury, and false declaration for office.
These charges stemmed from allegations surrounding his eligibility to contest the 2020 parliamentary elections.
Despite an offer from the new Attorney General to discontinue the 2022 lawsuit, Quayson chose to proceed with the trial.
Today, April 9, Justice Yanzuh ruled that the prosecution failed to provide sufficient evidence to substantiate the charges against the MP.
This acquittal marks a dramatic turn in Quayson’s political journey.
He had previously been removed from Parliament in 2023 following a Supreme Court decision that disqualified him from contesting the 2020 elections. However, he re-contested and won the Assin North parliamentary seat in a subsequent by-election.
The High Court’s decision allows Quayson to continue his parliamentary duties without the shadow of these criminal charges.
