President John Dramani Mahama has recounted his career aspirations and his journey to the highest office of the land, the seat of President of the Republic of Ghana.
The President said he never aspired to be a lawyer or a doctor but rather considered professions such as becoming a fireman or a driver for the State Transport Company (STC).
His motivation to be a bus driver, he explained, stemmed from his travels between Tamale and
Accra, where he admired the skill and precision of the drivers.
“I mean, if you asked me what I wanted to be in the future, I didn’t say I wanted to be a doctor or a lawyer. At one time, I wanted to be a fireman because I liked their uniform and the red fire trucks they used to drive,” he said during a Sunday service at the Cedar Mountain Chapel of the Assemblies of God, East Legon, Accra, on,
February 2.
“Then, at another time, I wanted to be a State Transport Company driver. Because when you sit in the bus from Tamale to Accra and watch the way the driver handles it, it looks nice,” he added.
According to the President, politics was not an initial option for him.
This was because, his late father, Mr. Emmanuel Adama Mahama, who served in the Nkrumah government, was imprisoned for two weeks following Nkrumah’s overthrow, which led him to shift into business.
“And so, because of the stories he shared about the trauma he suffered in prison and the setbacks he endured due to his political career, I told myself I would not be a politician. But God said, ‘Who are you to decide? I will do with you what I want.’ And the rest is history,” he said.
