During the vetting of John Kwadwo Gyapong, the Regional Minister-Designate for the Oti Region, on January 23, 2025, an unusual question raised by a member of the appointment committee sparked an intriguing conversation about leadership, age, and political contribution.
The committee member, seemingly concerned about Gyapong’s age and extensive career, asked: “At 74 years old and a father of ten, why have you held so many influential positions, including serving as a three-time parliamentarian, regional chairman for the NDC in both the Oti and Volta regions, and as constituency chairman? Isn’t it time for you to pass the baton to your children?”
The question caught some by surprise, but Gyapong’s response was calm, confident, and rooted in his deep commitment to both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) party and his country.
He began by drawing a parallel with President Nana Akufo-Addo, who served as president well into his 70s, remarking, “If Nana Akufo-Addo can serve as president at the age of 72 and leave office at 80, there is no reason I cannot continue to serve the people of Ghana.”
Gyapong continued by highlighting his extensive history with the NDC. “I am a founding member of the NDC party,” he emphasized.
“I’ve spent decades serving and supporting the party’s growth, and I am still passionate about seeing it succeed. My age doesn’t limit my ability to contribute, especially when the country and the party need experienced leadership during these critical times.”
Drawing on his vast experience, Gyapong explained that while younger generations bring fresh ideas and energy, seasoned politicians like himself bring invaluable wisdom and a deep understanding of the nation’s political fabric. His commitment to helping the NDC thrive in future elections remained clear.
“I am determined to contribute my expertise for the benefit of both the party and the nation,” he added. “I believe my work is far from over, and there is still so much I can do to support Ghana’s development.”
