Seven individuals have reportedly lost their lives after breaching the AngloGold Ashanti (AGA) mine in Obuasi.
The illegal miners were shot by military personnel from Operation Calm Life, who were stationed at the AGA mine.
In a statement, the Ghana Armed Forces explained that their troops fired at the miners in response to an attack on them. Some miners sustained injuries, while others managed to escape.
Amidst this development, a video of Blessed Godsbrain Smart, popularly known as Captain Smart, has surfaced.
The controversial TV presenter and host of the Onua Morning Show is seen calling on the youth of Obuasi to confront AngloGold Ashanti and claim what he referred to as their rightful share.
Speaking in Twi, Captain Smart made remarks suggesting that the youth should take matters into their own hands, accusing AGA of exploiting the town and its residents.
“Ghanaian youth in Obuasi go to the mine. Attack the mine and take what you want so that when you get hungry, you get something to eat. AGA if you are not careful, we will take you out of this country. Can you create a cyanide hole in South Africa?
“If not for bad leadership, how can these people do this in this country? This is what I want Nana Addo and Minister of Lands and Natural Resources to understand: AGA is destroying Obuasi and the youth of Obuasi need to rise because if you don’t get some of the gold with time you’ll become impotent,” he said on Accra-based Onua TV.
The video has sparked widespread condemnation on social media, with many accusing him of inciting violence.
