In a significant step toward strengthening Ghana’s democratic governance, President John Dramani Mahama has established a Constitution Review Committee. This move fulfills his promise to implement recommendations from previous constitutional review processes and to address gaps in the 1992 Constitution.
The committee, comprised of distinguished experts, is chaired by Prof. H. Kwasi Prempeh, a respected academic and governance expert. Other members include Justice Sophia Adinyirah, Prof. Kwame Karikari, Mrs. Charlotte Osei, Dr. Godwin Djokoto, Ibrahim Tanko Amidu, and Dr. Esi Ansah. Dr. Rainer Akumperigeya will serve as the committee’s secretary.
The committee’s mandate includes reviewing the work of the 2010 Constitution Review Commission and the 2023 Constitution Review Consultative Committee. It will also engage stakeholders to gather views on proposed amendments and make actionable recommendations aimed at addressing implementation challenges and enhancing democratic governance.
Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Acting Spokesperson to the President, highlighted the committee’s diverse composition, stating that it reflects the President’s commitment to engaging experts dedicated to national service and good governance.
The committee has been given five months to present its recommendations to the government for consideration. This initiative marks a renewed commitment to strengthening Ghana’s constitutional framework to meet contemporary governance needs.
