Former captain of Ghana Black Stars, Asamoah Gyan, has accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of exploiting his popularity for political gain during the 2024 General Elections.
Gyan, one of Ghana’s most celebrated footballers, made these claims in an Instagram Live session, where he expressed disappointment over his involvement with the ruling party’s campaign.
The 39-year-old had initially joined Dr Mahamudu Bawumia’s sports manifesto team in February 2024, ahead of the election.
His association with the NPP raised eyebrows, with many fans surprised by his apparent support for the party.
However, just weeks later, Gyan distanced himself from the NPP following a viral video of an altercation between him and an NPP official.
He stated that he was stepping down from the party to focus on his humanitarian work.
“They (NPP) used my popularity to get votes from the people,” Gyan said.
The party, however, faced a resounding defeat in the presidential election in December 2024, losing to the National Democratic Congress (NDC) by a massive margin.
