The Ghana Bloggers Association is calling on the Government of Ghana and all stakeholders to intensify efforts to combat the menace of illegal mining, known as galamsey.

This illicit activity has had devastating consequences on the environment, public health, and the socio-economic well-being of communities across the country.

In a statement signed by the President of the Association, Andre Mustapha Nii Okai Inusah, they expressed that as an association committed to responsible journalism, blogging, and national development, they believe it is critical to raise awareness and advocate for decisive action to stop galamsey now.

Below is the statement:

Press Statement by the Ghana Bloggers Association on the Urgent Need to Stop Galamsey (Illegal Mining)

Galamsey Must Stop Now: The Government of Ghana Must Take Immediate Action

The Ghana Bloggers Association, under the leadership of President Andre Mustapha Nii Okai Inusah, calls on the Government of Ghana and all stakeholders to intensify their efforts to combat the menace of illegal mining, known as galamsey.

This illicit activity has had devastating consequences on the environment, public health, and the socio-economic well-being of communities across the country.

As an association committed to responsible journalism and national development, we believe it is critical to raise awareness and advocate for decisive action to stop galamsey now.

The Devastating Impact of Galamsey

Environmental Degradation:
Galamsey has caused widespread destruction of Ghana’s natural resources. Our rivers and water bodies, such as the Pra, Ankobra, and Birim, have been severely polluted by the chemicals used in illegal mining, including mercury and cyanide. This contamination poses a serious threat to aquatic life and the availability of clean drinking water for millions of Ghanaians. Large tracts of forest reserves, such as the Atewa Forest, have also been depleted, contributing to deforestation, loss of biodiversity, and climate change.

RECOMMENDED :  10 heads of state confirm participation in President-Elect Mahama’s inauguration

Public Health Crisis:
The chemicals used in galamsey operations are poisoning the water and food supply, leading to long-term health problems such as cancer, respiratory diseases, and birth defects. Communities living in mining areas face the risk of exposure to toxic substances, and the contamination of water sources has exacerbated the country’s struggle to provide clean drinking water.

Socio-Economic Harm:
While some individuals and groups may profit from illegal mining, the larger society suffers immensely. Farmers are losing fertile land to galamsey operations, causing food insecurity. The destruction of the environment threatens livelihoods in agriculture, fishing, and tourism. Moreover, many children are being forced into mining instead of attending school, perpetuating cycles of poverty and illiteracy.

The Role of Government

The Government of Ghana must take urgent, strategic action to eradicate galamsey for the following reasons:

Strengthen Law Enforcement:

There is a need for a more robust enforcement of existing mining laws. Government agencies such as the Minerals Commission, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), and the Water Resources Commission must be empowered to effectively regulate mining activities. Additionally, security forces must be equipped to dismantle illegal mining operations and bring offenders to justice.

Increase Transparency and Accountability:
Transparency in the issuance of mining licenses and concessions is crucial. Government officials and companies complicit in illegal mining must be held accountable. Public disclosure of mining contracts and the inclusion of local communities in decision-making processes are essential steps in preventing further damage.

RECOMMENDED :  GoldBod Extends License Transition Deadline to June 21, 2025

Promote Sustainable Alternatives:
The government must prioritize sustainable mining practices and alternative livelihood programs for those involved in galamsey.

Investments in eco-friendly technologies and vocational training for youth in affected areas can provide them with alternative means of income, reducing the reliance on illegal mining.

International Cooperation:
Galamsey is not just a national issue; it has international ramifications, particularly regarding the global demand for gold. The government must collaborate with international partners to curb the export of illegally mined gold and support initiatives that promote responsible sourcing of minerals.

The Role of Bloggers in Stopping Galamsey

As bloggers, we have a critical role to play in the fight against galamsey. Our platform gives us the power to shape public opinion, influence policy, and hold leaders accountable. Here’s how we can contribute to this cause:

Raising Awareness:
We will use our platforms to inform the public about the dangers of galamsey, highlight its impact on communities, and advocate for immediate action. We must continue to spotlight the voices of those directly affected by illegal mining, sharing their stories and experiences.

Holding Leaders Accountable:
Our blogs and social media channels are powerful tools for exposing corruption, negligence, and complicity in illegal mining. We must investigate and report on the actions of government officials, mining companies, and local authorities to ensure they fulfill their responsibilities.

RECOMMENDED :  Ghana Faces Load Shedding as Minority Points to Questionable $800M Gas Deal

Educating the Youth:
Through blogging and social media campaigns, we will educate the youth on the importance of environmental conservation, the dangers of illegal mining, and the need for sustainable alternatives. The younger generation must understand that their future depends on a clean and healthy environment.

Promoting Dialogue:
We encourage open discussions between stakeholders—government, traditional authorities, civil society organizations, and local communities—on how to best tackle galamsey. As bloggers, we can create platforms for these conversations, bringing together diverse voices to find solutions.
Conclusion

The time to stop galamsey is now. The Ghana Bloggers Association stands ready to work with the government and other stakeholders to ensure the protection of our environment and the well-being of future generations. We call on the Government of Ghana to demonstrate bold leadership by implementing immediate and lasting measures to end illegal mining once and for all.

Signed,
Andre Mustapha Nii Okai Inusah (Attractive Mustapha )
President, Ghana Bloggers Association
