President Mahama Cuts Sod For University In Eastern Region

President John Dramani Mahama has cut the sod for work to start on a University for the Eastern region at Somanya.

The University to be known as the University of Environment and Sustainable Development is a frontline campaign promise of President Mahama.

The President assured the Chiefs and People of Yilo -Krobo, that funding has been already been secured for the project and approved by Parliament hence the project will not stall.

He urged the community to get involved in the construction of the institution.

In 2012, the NDCs Manifesto captured a promise to build at least one Public University in each region.

The country can boast of the University of Health and Allied Sciences in Ho and the University of Energy and Natural Resources in the Brong Ahafo region.

A final report to make the campuses of the University for Development Studies into autonomous university will be presented before Cabinet next week.

The Eastern University or the University of Environment and sustainable development, comes with an entirely different focus. Courses such as research into Climate Change, environmental economics and science and natural resources will be run.

The University of Environment and Sustainable Development will have a satellite campus at Donkorkrom in the Affram Plains.

The Acting Paramount Chief of the Yilo Krobo traditional area Osayem Odonkor Tumeh, bestowed on the President the title “a fulfiller of promises”. He said the people of Somanya, will remain grateful to President Mahama.

Meanwhile, the Committee set up for the formation of the University led by Dr. Christina Amoako Nuamah, has completed work on the appointment of a foundation Vice Chancellor for the University. President Mahama, thanked Dr. Amoako Nuamah, particularly for the hard work. He also rendered special thanks to the Yilo traditional area for allocating three hundred and 10 acres of land for the project.
