AFCON 2017 Ghana vs Egypt in numbers

Pulse Sports writer and Historian, Thomas Freeman Yeboah has compiled all the encounters between Ghana and Egypt as they face off on Wednesday in the final group D game of the 2017 AFCON

The final group D game promises to pitch the two most successful nations in anal of the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), since Egypt (7 titles) and Ghana (4 titles) have won eleven titles between them.
These two powerhouses on the African continent have had 24 battles. Ghana have won seven (7), while Egypt have emerged victorious on twelve (12) occasions, with five (5) ending in draws.

The first ever encounter between them was on 13th November, 1959. The pharaohs of Egypt defeated the Black Stars 2-1 in an Olympic Game qualifier: Rifaat Ateya scored both goals for Egypt.

Egypt have scored thirty-six (36) goals against Ghana and the West African side put twenty-nine balls at the back of the North Africans net in all competitions.

This is going to be the fourth game between Egypt and Ghana in the Africa Cup of Nations tournament. They have a win apiece, with a game ending in a draw.

The Black Stars have already squeezed through to the quarter finals of the ongoing AFCON, following wins over Uganda and Mali in their first and second group D games of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations.

On the other hand, the Pharaohs who are on four points, after a draw against Mali and a victory over Uganda would have to avoid a defeat against the Black Stars to finish second in the group or better still beat Ghana to go top of the group.
