The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Julius Neequaye Kotey, has reacted to suggestions that he is eyeing the Korley Klottey parliamentary seat, which is currently occupied by his party member, Dr Zanetor Agyeman Rawlings.
Speaking in a recent interview on Starr FM, the DVLA boss stated that he has every right to contest for the seat, being an indigene of the constituency.
He added that he has served the National Democratic Congress in the Korley Klottey constituency for several years and there is no law barring him from contesting for the seat.
“If I’m eyeing that seat, it is not against any law. I have the right to go and contest for the seat. This is my third term as a constituency executive. Let me tell you. At age 17, I was a branch secretary for NDC. At age 17, I was not allowed to register. In 2004, I was a polling agent even though I wasn’t allowed to vote.
“In 2006, I became a constituency. I became a branch secretary. In 2010, I became a branch chairman. I became a deputy constituency communications officer, a constituency communications officer, and I’m now a vice chairman for the constituency. If I want to contest for that seat, I’m free; I am good enough to do it,” he said.
Neequaye Kotey, however, indicated that he has not made up his mind on when he would contest for the seat.
He stressed that “anything can happen” and left the possibility open that he could contest in 2028 or in a subsequent election.
According to him, although he has previously stated that he would not contest the seat in 2028, circumstances could change, and he could decide to enter the race either in 2028 or in the future.
“But I’ve said, and I’ve said it over and over again, that in 2028, I am not contesting. I don’t know if the Lord will change my mind for the subsequent years. Anything can happen. I can contest in 2028 or in the future. Never say never; I can decide to. I don’t break any law,” he said.
He added: “So Dr Zanetor should relax. The way she’s going around, she should relax. I’m not coming to contest her. She should relax.”
