CalBank has come under criticism after being accused of failing to participate in the National General Cleaning Exercise initiated by President John Dramani Mahama.

The criticism was directed at the bank during the nationwide sanitation campaign held on July 10 and 11, 2026, which encouraged citizens, public institutions and private businesses to take responsibility for maintaining clean environments within their communities.
Speaking while taking part in clean-up activities, a Member of Parliament expressed disappointment that the bank had allegedly failed to clean the frontage of one of its branches despite operating within the community.
“The least you can do is clean your frontage. Banks are not an exception. I have left Parliament to clean your gutters for you to get paid?” the lawmaker said in a Facebook post that has since gained widespread attention.
The remarks were made as volunteers and residents desilted gutters and cleared refuse as part of the government’s renewed push to improve sanitation and reduce the risk of flooding.
The National General Cleaning Exercise was organised following a directive by President John Dramani Mahama, who called on Ghanaians, businesses and public institutions to actively contribute to keeping their surroundings clean.
The initiative forms part of broader efforts to address the country’s sanitation challenges, promote environmental responsibility and encourage regular community clean-up activities.
CalBank has not publicly responded to the criticism at the time of publication.
