President John Dramani Mahama has unveiled plans to construct a new runway at Sunyani Airport aimed at accommodating larger aircraft and enhancing air connectivity in Ghana’s Bono Region.

The proposed infrastructure project is expected to significantly improve access to air travel while stimulating economic growth in the region by enabling bigger commercial aircraft to operate from Sunyani.
Speaking during the Resetting Ghana Tour in Sunyani on Thursday, March 19, 2026, President Mahama highlighted the limitations of the current airport infrastructure, particularly the runway, which he described as too short to support jet operations.
“The old Sunyani Airport has stalled. The runway is only about 1.5 kilometres. Because of that, planes that can land in Kumasi cannot come here,” he explained.
He further noted that although there had been considerations to expand the existing runway, surrounding developments make such plans unfeasible.
“That requires that we expand the runway, but because of the buildings in the area, we may not be able to work on it. So, we decided to build a new runway for the airport,” he added.
According to the President, traditional authorities have already released land for the project, and design plans are in place for a new 2.4-kilometre runway capable of handling larger aircraft.
“The chiefs have already given out lands for that. The design exists, and the new runway will be about 2.4 kilometres to be able to land any plane of any size,” he said.
President Mahama indicated that government will return at the appropriate time to officially cut sod for the commencement of construction.
