Former National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party, Freddie Blay, has been remanded into custody by the Akropong Circuit Court following his arrest over an alleged demolition dispute at Kitase in the Eastern Region.

Blay was handed over to the Ghana Police Service in Akropong after officers in Accra executed a warrant for his arrest on Monday, March 16, 2026. The warrant was reportedly issued after he failed to appear before the court in connection with the case.
The dispute centres on an alleged demolition order said to have been given by the former party chairman concerning a house under construction on a parcel of land at Kitase. The landowner is said to have lodged a complaint with the police, triggering an investigation and an invitation for Blay to assist with inquiries.
According to investigators, Blay allegedly failed to honour the invitation and later did not appear before the court when charges were filed against him in April 2025. His absence prompted the court to issue a bench warrant, which was executed this week.
During proceedings at the Akropong Circuit Court, Blay was remanded and is expected to reappear on April 9, 2026, as the case continues.
However, sources close to Blay insist the situation has been misrepresented. They claim the dispute stems from land he purchased in 1994 that later became the subject of litigation. According to the sources, Blay did not order the demolition of any building but rather instructed that a bare piece of land be cleared in January 2026 to prevent the breeding of dangerous animals, including reptiles.
The sources further disclosed that the complainant had earlier secured a favourable ruling at the High Court in Koforidua, but that decision has since been appealed. They maintain that attempts to serve the complainant with processes related to the appeal were unsuccessful.
They also argue that aside from the ongoing appeal, Blay was unaware of any other court proceedings involving him until the arrest warrant was executed.
The case has drawn public attention given Blay’s prominence within the New Patriotic Party and his long-standing role in Ghanaian politics.
