The National Labour Commission (NLC) has directed the Civil and Local Government Staff Association of Ghana (CLOGSAG) to rescind its planned nationwide strike scheduled to begin on Monday, March 9, 2026.

CLOGSAG had earlier announced the industrial action in a notice dated March 5, 2026, citing unresolved issues regarding the salary structure and conditions of service for civil and local government staff.
According to the association, members had been instructed to stay at home until further notice due to delays by government agencies in implementing a new salary structure that was expected to take effect on January 1, 2025.
The union noted that negotiations over the new pay structure date back to 2019. It said two Memoranda of Understanding had been signed with the government, but the agreements have yet to be implemented. The planned strike, CLOGSAG explained, was intended to pressure the government to address the long-standing concerns.
However, in a statement issued on Thursday, the NLC said the declaration of the strike violates provisions of the Labour Act, 2003 (Act 651).
The Commission explained that under Sections 159 and 160 of the Act, any party intending to embark on a strike must give at least seven days’ notice to the other party involved as well as to the Commission before taking such action.
According to the NLC, CLOGSAG failed to comply with these legal requirements, rendering the planned strike illegal.
The Commission has therefore summoned representatives of CLOGSAG and the relevant government authorities to appear before it on Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at 2:00 p.m.
The NLC emphasised its commitment to ensuring a peaceful and harmonious industrial relations environment while efforts are made to resolve the dispute.
