The candidate of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Baba Jamal, has won the Ayawaso East parliamentary by-election, securing a commanding majority of the votes cast.

According to provisional results, Baba Jamal garnered 10,803 votes, representing 63.33% of the total valid votes cast.
His closest contender, Baba Ali Yussif of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), polled 4,000 votes, accounting for 23.45%.
The three other candidates in the race collectively secured 2,254 votes (13.26%), while 122 ballots were rejected.
However, the Electoral Commission of Ghana is yet to officially declare the certified results of the by-election.
Five Candidates Contested the Poll
The March 3, 2026, by-election featured five candidates:
Baba Jamal — NDC
Baba Ali Yussif — NPP
Ibrahim Iddrisu — Liberal People’s Party (LPP)
Alhaji Mohammed Umaru Sanda — Independent
David Kannor — Independent
The by-election was necessitated by the passing of the sitting NDC Member of Parliament, Naser Toure Mahama.
A Stronghold Maintained
The Ayawaso East Constituency has existed since the creation of Ghana’s Fourth Republic and has participated in nine parliamentary elections prior to this by-election.
Historical data shows that the NDC has won all nine previous parliamentary contests in the constituency, with the NPP consistently placing second.
Should the Electoral Commission confirm the provisional results, this victory would mark the 10th consecutive parliamentary win for the NDC in Ayawaso East — further cementing the party’s dominance in the constituency.
More updates are expected once the Electoral Commission formally announces the official results.
