President John Dramani Mahama has stated that he will sign the anti-LGBTQ+ legislation currently before Parliament if lawmakers approve it and forward it to his desk.
Speaking during a meeting with the leadership of the Christian Council of Ghana in Accra on Tuesday, November 18, the President underscored his belief that Ghana’s traditional family values must be preserved. According to him, gender is fixed at birth and the family remains the nucleus of Ghanaian society.
“A person’s gender is determined at birth, and the family is the foundation of our nation. That is our position,” Mahama told the Council, adding that his outlook mirrors the stance long held by the Christian Council.
The President also supported the Speaker of Parliament’s proposal for the controversial bill to be relaid before the House to make room for further debate and potential amendments. He maintained that the legislative process must run its full course.
Ultimately, Mahama said the decision of Parliament—representing the will of the Ghanaian people—will guide his actions. “If Parliament endorses the bill and passes it, I will sign it,” he affirmed.
