Vice President Prof. Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has reaffirmed Ghana’s commitment to deepening its long-standing relations with China, describing the partnership as one built on shared history, mutual respect, and common aspirations.
In a Facebook post, Prof. Opoku-Agyemang said she extended warm congratulations on behalf of President John Dramani Mahama to the People’s Republic of China on the celebration of its 76th anniversary, as well as the 65th anniversary of Ghana–China diplomatic relations.
She highlighted the vision of Ghana’s first President, Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, and China’s Chairman Mao Zedong, whose leadership laid the foundation for cooperation between the two nations.
“Our shared history has laid the foundation for true partnership and mutual respect. There has been steady growth in trade between our countries, and Ghana is determined for this relationship to translate into local development that empowers our youth,” the Vice President stated.
Prof. Opoku-Agyemang further stressed that Ghana’s 24-Hour Economy Programme is central to creating jobs and opportunities in energy, renewable power, and trade, and she underscored the need for a win–win partnership that benefits the most vulnerable.
She also commended the ongoing cooperation in health and education, particularly medical exchanges and academic collaborations, which continue to strengthen people-to-people relations.
Looking forward, she expressed hope that more Ghanaian businesses would explore investment opportunities in China, while welcoming Chinese enterprises to support Ghana’s development agenda. She singled out projects such as the Aflao Market redevelopment, which aims to improve working conditions for market women, ensuring safety and dignity in their trade.
“May our friendship with China grow from strength to strength,” she concluded.
