The station’s presenter, Akyemkwaa Nana Kofi Asare, alleged during a broadcast on Saturday, August 9, 2025, that President Mahama, had played a role in the accident.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, August 12, Wontumi TV’s management, described the remarks as “inappropriate, unfounded, and contrary to our values of professionalism, accuracy, and fairness in broadcasting.”
The statement stressed that the comments did not reflect the station’s views, policies, or editorial position, and were made without evidence.
“As a responsible media house, we deeply regret the distress and reputational harm this may have caused to the President, the NDC, and the affected families,” the management said, adding that disciplinary action would be taken against the presenter. The station further stated that its editorial guidelines had been reinforced to ensure that all on-air content is based on verified facts and credible information.
The apology comes in the wake of regulatory action by the National Communications Authority (NCA) against three radio stations under Wontumi Multimedia Company Limited. The affected stations – 95.9 FM in Accra, 101.3 FM in Kumasi, and 101.3 FM in Takoradi – were suspended for failing to address breaches, including the unauthorised use of Studio-to-Transmitter Link (STL) frequencies and operating from unapproved transmitter locations.
The suspensions, followed the expiry of a 30-day grace period granted by President Mahama, allowing defaulting stations to rectify such violations.
The NCA stated that Wontumi Multimedia failed to comply fully within the amnesty window, resulting in the enforcement of sanctions under Regulation 54 of the Electronic Communications Regulations, 2011 (L.I. 1991), which prohibits broadcasting without a valid Certificate of Compliance.
Six other radio stations across the country were also shut down after neglecting to take corrective measures during the grace period. The NCA reiterated its commitment to monitoring the broadcasting sector to ensure strict adherence to licensing conditions and relevant laws.
