The Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Bawku Central, Hon. Mahama Ayariga, has strongly condemned the recent violent confrontations between the youth and law enforcement officers in Bawku.
The clashes, which reportedly resulted in fatalities, injuries, and the vandalization of his private residence, have raised concerns about escalating tensions in the area.
In an official statement issued while on assignment outside the country, Mr. Ayariga expressed deep concern over the loss of lives and the attempted burning of his house.
He attributed the unrest to mounting frustrations among the youth over the pace of resolving the long-standing chieftaincy issues in Bawku, and alleged misconduct by certain law enforcement officers.
“I understand the anger and frustration of the youth about the pace of the resolution of the situation in Bawku and Kusaaug and the misconduct of some misguided law enforcement officers,” he stated.
The MP reaffirmed his unwavering support for a peaceful resolution through legal and constituti onal means. He urged residents to exercise restraint and maintain cordial relations with law enforcement agencies to ensure safety and order.
Mr. Ayariga reiterated his trust in the process being led by the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, and supported by other traditional leaders, including the Overlords of Kusaaug, Mamprugu, and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government. He emphasized the importance of adhering to established laws and judicial decisions in addressing the matter.
He also dismissed what he described as “lies being told” about him by political opponents attempting to capitalize on the current unrest for electoral gain. “The smear campaign on social media will not distract me. In the end, we will be vindicated,” he asserted.
Mr. Ayariga assured the people of Bawku and Kusaaug of his commitment to a lasting and peaceful resolution, calling for unity and patience during this critical time.
