Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has returned from a one-day working visit to Abuja, Nigeria, where he held discussions with Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on strengthening regional cooperation within ECOWAS.
In a Facebook post, Mahama described the meeting as “insightful,” expressing gratitude for President Tinubu’s presence at his recent inauguration as Special Guest of Honour. He highlighted the deep-rooted relationship between Ghana and Nigeria, emphasizing the importance of unity in the West African sub-region.
The discussions focused on enhancing ECOWAS to foster greater economic integration and cooperation. Mahama and Tinubu also addressed regional security concerns, particularly the growing threats of terrorism and violent extremism, which continue to challenge peace and stability in West Africa.
Additionally, Mahama briefed President Tinubu, who currently serves as Chair of the ECOWAS Authority of Heads of State, on his recent engagements with the leaders of Mali, Niger, and Burkina Faso. These discussions align with ongoing efforts to strengthen diplomatic ties and promote good neighbourliness among West African nations.
Mahama’s visit underscores his continued commitment to regional diplomacy and cooperation, particularly at a time when ECOWAS faces critical political and security challenges.
