A storm is brewing at the Ghana Airports Company Limited (GACL) as a petition has been launched calling for the removal of the Managing Director, Mrs. Yvonne Nana Afriyie Opare, over allegations of discriminatory practices, partisanship, and unfair conduct.
At the heart of the controversy are several incidents that have raised eyebrows among staff and stakeholders. One such incident is the rapid promotion of Mr. Prince Annoh-Djan, who was elevated to the position of Director for Procurement Department in a remarkably short period.
His promotion from Assistant Director to Director in just six months has sparked concerns of favoritism, particularly given his familial ties to Mr. Frank Annoh Dompreh, the Member of Parliament for Nsawam Adoagyiri.
Further fueling the fire is the promotion of Mr. Eric Yeboah, an Avsec Officer II, to the position of manager, despite his alleged involvement in narcotic cases at the airport. His appointment has raised questions about the MD’s judgment and potential bias, given Mr. Yeboah’s reported affiliation with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as the constituency chairman for the Madina Abokobi area.
Moreover, the MD has been accused of distributing monies to NPP staff members during a meeting at a popular hotel in Accra, where she allegedly promised to reward them for their hard work in retaining her in office. The gesture has been perceived as a blatant attempt to buy loyalty and influence.
Additionally, the MD has faced criticism for her handling of company assets, including the disposal of vehicles without notice to staff, and awarding a contract to her sister to sew uniforms for frontline staff, which has been met with resistance due to the uniform’s striking resemblance to those of Aviance.
The petitioners argue that retaining Mrs. Opare as MD will create tension among staff and undermine the company’s integrity.
They urge the relevant authorities to take immediate action to address these concerns and ensure that the GACL is managed in a fair, transparent, and accountable manner.
