Deputy Presidential Spokesperson, Shamima Muslim has dismissed the claims that President Mahama has paid a deaf ear to recent attacks on journalists in the country.
At a press conference on Tuesday, February 18 2025, President of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA), Albert Kwabena Dwumfour strongly condemned the Mahama administration over the rising number of assaults on journalists.
Dwumfour revealed that since the start of President Mahama’s administration, seven cases of journalist attacks have been recorded, describing the situation as “unprecedented.”
But speaking in an interview on TV3’s The Big Issue on New Day, Shamima explained that President Mahama has a good standing with the Ghana Journalist Association and he’s an advocate of media freedom.
She noted that the President is the last man in his administration to show no concern to assaults on journalists.
“I want to assure my colleague journalists that if there is anyone in this administration that is on the side of a free and just society as well as a free and just media, it is His Excellency John Dramani Mahama who is still in good standing with the GJA.
“Of course, we won’t sit down to allow unfettered attacks against the media. What the role government will play and leaders must play is to always ensure that we speak against attack on the media and we take actions,” she stated.
The Deputy Presidential Spokesperson further referenced the President’s assurance and promise in the NDC’s manifesto ahead of the 2024 elections to find the killers of Investigative journalist Ahmed Suale.
She said this signifies the President’s commitment to ensure that press freedom is protected under his administration.
