A delegation of Members of Parliament (MPs) from the National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by Hon. Nii Lantey Vanderpuye of Odododiodioo, paid a commiseration visit to traders affected by the recent fire disaster at Katamanto Market in Accra.
The inferno, which broke out in the early hours of Thursday, left the bustling commercial hub in ruins, destroying goods worth thousands of cedis and displacing numerous traders, many of whom deal in second-hand clothing.
The delegation, comprising Hon. Elizabeth Ofosu Agyare (Techiman North), Hon. Rita Odoley Sowah (Dadekotopon), and Hon. Sampson Chiragia (Navrongo Central), conveyed their heartfelt sympathies on behalf of the NDC party, including its President-elect, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, and Vice President-elect.
Addressing the affected traders, the MPs expressed their concern about the devastating impact of the fire on the victims and the thousands of households that rely on the market for their livelihoods. They assured the traders of the NDC’s unwavering support and prayers during this difficult time.
Hon. Nii Lantey Vanderpuye highlighted the incoming administration’s commitment to finding a lasting solution to the frequent fire outbreaks in markets. He reaffirmed the NDC’s plan to modernize markets across the country, making them safer and more conducive for trade.
“The NDC is determined to implement measures that will protect traders from such unfortunate incidents while enhancing the convenience and safety of market spaces. This is part of our broader agenda to support local businesses and promote trade facilitation,” Hon. Vanderpuye stated.
The market executives expressed their gratitude to the NDC MPs for the timely visit and pledged their cooperation with any government initiatives aimed at alleviating their suffering.
The Katamanto Market fire has once again brought to light the vulnerabilities of market spaces in Ghana, sparking calls for comprehensive solutions to prevent future disasters. As the victims begin to count their losses, many are hopeful that the assurances given by the NDC will translate into tangible actions under the next administration.
The traders and their families continue to appeal for support from the general public and other stakeholders to rebuild their lives.
