Former President and flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), John Dramani Mahama, has emphasized that the success of the 2024 election Peace Pact depends on meaningful actions rather than empty promises.
Addressing the gathering at the Peace Pact signing ceremony in Accra on November 28, 2024, Mahama warned that a lack of trust and sincerity among key stakeholders could derail efforts to ensure peaceful elections.
He pointed to past incidents, such as the 2020 general elections and the violent Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election, as examples that cast doubt on the authenticity of previous peace commitments.
“It is commendable that we commit ourselves to peace and articulate lofty ideals,” Mahama remarked. “However, these efforts will mean nothing if they are undermined by insincerity and mistrust. True peace is built on the alignment of words and actions, particularly by those in authority.”
Mahama further stressed that the signing of the pact, while symbolic, must be backed by practical measures to guarantee its effectiveness.
“Without concrete steps to uphold these commitments, this well-meaning initiative risks becoming an exercise in futility. The incidents during the last election cycle and the Ayawaso West Wuogon by-election serve as stark reminders of the challenges we face in translating words into reality,” he added.
The former president called on all political actors and institutions to honor their pledges with tangible efforts, ensuring Ghana remains a beacon of peace and democracy in the region.
