The Speaker of Parliament has announced the recall of Members of Parliament for a session scheduled on Thursday, November 7. This decision was communicated in a notice issued on Thursday, October 31.
This recall is in accordance with Article 112 (3) of Ghana’s Constitution and Standing Orders 5 and 53, which grant the Speaker the authority to summon Parliament when necessary in the public interest.
The session will take place at 10 a.m. at the Accra International Conference Centre, which is currently serving as the temporary venue for Parliamentary meetings during the renovation of the main House.
While the specific topics for discussion have not been revealed, the timing of the recall suggests that pressing national issues may be addressed.
Members of Parliament are expected to arrive in Accra in a timely manner to engage with these urgent matters.
This announcement comes on the heels of Speaker Alban Bagbin’s decision to adjourn parliamentary proceedings indefinitely on Tuesday, October 22, following a tumultuous session marked by conflicts between Members from the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC) over the majority status in Parliament.
Furthermore, Speaker Bagbin noted a communication from the Supreme Court, which instructed him to retract his previous ruling that declared four parliamentary seats vacant. In a related development, the Supreme Court dismissed a stay application from the Speaker on Wednesday, October 30, reaffirming its original directive.
