John Dramani Mahama, flagbearer of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has pledged to prioritize healthcare infrastructure in Zongo communities if elected as president in the 2024 elections. Speaking at the conclusion of the Ghana National Muslims Conference in Accra on October 27, Mahama highlighted his commitment to improving medical services and respecting the cultural needs of Ghana’s Muslim communities.
One of Mahama’s key initiatives includes establishing specialized mortuary facilities tailored to Islamic burial practices. The proposed facilities aim to address the longstanding need for culturally respectful handling of deceased Muslims, ensuring compliance with Islamic customs and easing the burden on Zongo families during bereavement.
Building on his 2020 campaign promises, Mahama also outlined plans to upgrade local health centers within Zongo areas, aiming to equip them with modern resources to better serve residents. His proposed healthcare upgrades are designed to provide more efficient, accessible medical services, targeting underserved Zongo communities.
Furthermore, Mahama addressed the need for improved abattoirs that meet halal standards. He expressed his intention to collaborate with the private sector to construct new, hygienic slaughterhouses in locations like Tulaku and rehabilitate existing facilities to meet World Health Organization (WHO) standards and religious requirements.
Mahama stressed that these enhancements would strengthen public health, support food security, and fulfill the community’s religious expectations, making them essential components of his broader vision for inclusive national development.
