John Mensah joins AFC United

Former Ghana captain, John Mensah, has completed a move to Swedish second tier side Athletic FC United, the club have confirmed.

The 33-year-old joins the Solna-based outfit on a one-year deal following a short spell with Slovak club FC Nitra.

The centre-back has also previously played for the likes of French sides Lyon and Rennes as well as English Premier League outfit Sunderland.

“John is a central defender with a resume that speaks for itself,” sports director Azad Budak told the club’s official website.

“His experience and routine will give us and our younger players a lot, and we are delighted to have him here.

“In my previous profession, I worked with John Mensah when he played in Lyon. It is thanks to a continued good relationship with the player and his agent that made it possible for us to carry out this kind of deal.

“It is with great satisfaction to note that my past is my benefit when it comes to relationship with players and clubs in Europe.”

Besides representing Ghana at four Africa Cup of Nations tournaments, the Obuasi-born played for the Black Stars at the 2006 and 2010 Fifa World Cup editions.
