Former President John Dramani Mahama has opened up about loyalty shifts within his inner circle, revealing that many individuals distanced themselves after his defeat in the 2016 elections.
The President-elect, said he is committed to serving Ghanaians after his reelection on Saturday, December 07, 2024, without allowing the privileges of power to stand his way.
Recounting his experience after losing the 2016 elections, the former President said many who used to come to him during his presidency turned their backs at him.
He disclosed that it was only his family, church members and some close friends who kept in touch with him, an experience he says has taught him a lesson in his political career.
Mahama said the Christmas hampers which prior to his defeat flooded his home and office during the festive season ceased the moment he lost the polls.
Based on the experience, the former President says he is unfazed by the privileges of the highest office which he says is transient, saying he is ready to serve Ghanaians with humility.
Speaking at a Thanksgiving Service held in his honour at the Ringway Assemblies of God Church in Accra Sunday, December 15, 2024, John Mahama said despite his decisive victory on December 07, he would be grounded on his approach to governance.
He called for unity and collective action, admonishing the populace to rally together to address the challenges confronting the nation.
The President-elect also thanked Ghanaians for the unfettered support given him by the close friends and family members, as well as church members during his time in opposition.
“When I lost in 2016, the Christmas hampers stopped coming. The many people who used to queue at my gate for a moment of my time simply vanished.
“It was only my family, siblings, closest friends, and church members who stayed by my side,” he remarked.
Reflecting on the fleeting nature of power, he added: “These trappings of power don’t get to my head. I have learnt that the praises and accolades one receives are often tied to the title of ‘President.’ One day, that title will no longer be there, and life will return to its essence.”
