The Volta Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) has stated that royalties paid to mining communities will be doubled under the Akufo-Adddo administration.
Mr. John Peter Amewu, the current Volta Regional Chairman of the NPP, and President Nana Akufo Addo’s Lands and Natural Resources Minister Designate speaking during the inauguration of a Resettlement Project at the Edikan Mine in Ayanfuri.
“With regard to mining royalties, the policy of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is to ensure that the mining community receives a higher share.”
As things currently stand, 80% of the royalties received from mining activities go to the government purse, 10% goes to the Minerals Commission, with the remaining 10% to the mining community.
This, according the Lands and Resources Minister-designate, is something the NPP government seeks to change.
“Under the new presidency of Nana Akufo-Addo, we will reduce the government’s share to 70% while doubling the community’s share to 20%,” Mr Amewu said.
“The additional 10% to the communities will be given to the District Assemblies to be used specifically for developing infrastructure in the mining communities. This will ensure that more value is retained in the mining communities,” he added.
