NPP promises are election year “gimmick”- Mahama

President John Mahama has slammed the promises being made by the New Patriotic Party (NPP) as “election-year gimmick.”

According to the president Mahama, it is easy to make promises when you are not in government, accusing the party of sloganeering.
He likened the NPP’s promises to a football spectator in the stands who score goals with the mouth.

He was speaking at a rally in Nandom in the Upper West Region.
He said: “A lot of the things that our opponents talk about are election gimmicks. It’s easy to promise.

“When you’re the one watching a football match in the spectator stands you can score as many goals that you want with your mouth but when you are on the football park it is not as easy to score.
“And so you make all the promises; 1 village-1-dam, you don’t even know what a dam is.

“You can’t tell a dug out from a dam, from a barrage dam, from an irrigation dam, you can’t tell and so you say 1 village-1-dam. What does 1 village-1-dam mean?”
–My promises are realistic–
But the presidential nominee of the NPP, Nana Akufo-Addo, has said his promises are realistic and not election year gimmick.
Addressing party supporters in Hohoe last month, Akufo-Addo said he deliver on his promises when elected into office in the December vote.
“All these promises, I have come here to Hohoe to let you know. These are not election gimmicks. They are not empty promises. If I could not do them, I would not stand before the people of Ghana and say I am coming to do it. I know the NPP and I, we have worked out what we need to do. We know we can do it,” he said.
–Renew my mandate–

President Mahama, who is seeking a second, asked voters to renew his mandate to continue with his developmental agenda.

He promised to repair roads in the region when he is reelected. He bemoaned the fact that the region has the least tarred roads.
The president also expressed confidence of winning, saying his campaign has gained enthusiasm because of numerous developmental projects he has initiated.

He also urged for calm among NDC supporters, promising the country a peaceful election.
