Hundreds Attend Maiden Edition of Young Cadres’ Inter-Constituency Soccer Fiesta

Hundreds of National Democratic Congress (NDC) faithfuls yesterday thronged the community park of Asikasu, a town in the New Juaben North constituency to witness a soccer event organized by the Young Cadres Association of the NDC.

The event, the first in a series of sporting activities planned by the youth activist and mobilization group within the ruling party, saw in attendance eight teams drawn from four constituencies in the Eastern Region.

Delivering his speech to officially kick-start the programme, Michael Derry, President of Young Cadres Association, disclosed that the decision to roll out the programme stemmed from the need to galvanize and unite the youth at the grassroots level in order to execute a successful campaign towards the 2016 general elections. According to him “Young Cadres sees a need to contribute towards the execution of the party’s electioneering campaign by engaging the youth and using them to spread the good works of the government.”

On his part, Bright Botchway, the General Secretary of Young Cadres Association intimated that the youth formed the base of the party and thus their role in fostering growth, especially at the grassroots level, could not be underestimated. This, according to him, thus underscored the decision of the association to concentrate its activities on the youth at the local level.

In his speech, Mr Kwabena Okyere Kusi, the Municipal Chief Executive of the New Juaben Municipal Assembly, who was the special guest of honour, commended the efforts being made by Young Cadres in using sports as a tool to engender unity and camaraderie. He tasked the youth in the party to work hard to sell the message and achievements of the government so as to have the party retained after the 2016 polls.

The Haruna Apaw Wiredu, the party’s parliamentary candidate for New Juaben North, who also attended the event encouraged his constituents to vote massively for the party in the upcoming elections.

Regional executives of the party who graced the occasion included Jamal Konah, Eastern regional communication officer, Acheampong Owoahene, the constituency chairman for New Juaben North and and one of his constituency executive members, Samuel Afari Agyiri, as well as Appiah Kubi, Parliamentary Candidate for Akuapem North. Also in attendance was Samuel Tetteh Komlorm, the Assemblyman for Asikasu Electoral Area.

In the competition itself, Suhum emerged the overall winner after defeating Koforidua at the finals. Nankese placed third whilst Asikasu came fourth. The top four competing teams received sorting items sporting items including jerseys and footballs while a donation of streetlight bulbs were given to the Asikasu township. All the teams also received cartons of assorted drinks from Mr Haruna Wiredu.
